ActiveScale Cold Storage

What is cold data? And how do we bring it to “life”?

Renowned technology analyst company International Data Corp (IDC) predicts sustained data growth of 19% annually over the coming years.

A further increase in the amount of data stored is expected, in particular because any future-oriented company worth its salt can recognize the value of data as a means of digital transformation. Data allows you to create value, develop new sources of income and effectively set and validate a strategic course.

Which brings us to the topic of “cold data”…

What is cold data?

Imagining that data has a life cycle, “hot data” refers to data that is actively used and needs to be accessed quickly, whereas “warm data” refers to data that is retrieved on a regular basis in a specific period of time. “Cold data” is a term used to describe inactive data that is never or only rarely accessed. Industry analysts believe that 60% of all data stored is cold data.

Cold data

Traditionally, cold data referred only to information that was stored in order to meet statutory or internal guidelines requiring retention for a certain number of years. This data was often simply stored on tape media and taken offline for the rare event that it would be needed again – things are different today, however.

How do you bring your cold data to “life”?

With Quantum ActiveScale Cold Storage, you can bring your cold data to life. This is a new class of object store offering secure, made-to-last and highly affordable storage for archiving your cold data. With ActiveScale Cold Storage, any company that generates petabytes of data can use S3 Glacier Class Storage in its own data center or in a hosted IT environment.

ActiveScale Cold Storage

Based on S3-APIs, storage classes and life cycle guidelines, applications and workflows can be supported in your own data centers and hybrid multi-clouds using the industry’s best-value TCO solution.

Benefit from the economic efficiency of cloud storage today in your own data center by using the same architecture as cloud hyperscalers without exposing your data to any unnecessary risks or cyberthreats.

The efficient, highly available and free access is based on our hybrid single namespace architecture. NVMe-based object metadata enables ultra-quick queries and simple enrichment of data both in the case of active and also cold data. This is achieved with the new 2D erasure encoding and a rock-solid, redundant RAIL architecture that can be easily scaled to billions of objects, exabytes of data and new technology generations.
