What is cold data?
Imagining that data has a life cycle, “hot data” refers to data that is actively used and needs to be accessed quickly, whereas “warm data” refers to data that is retrieved on a regular basis in a specific period of time. “Cold data” is a term used to describe inactive data that is never or only rarely accessed. Industry analysts believe that 60% of all data stored is cold data.
Traditionally, cold data referred only to information that was stored in order to meet statutory or internal guidelines requiring retention for a certain number of years. This data was often simply stored on tape media and taken offline for the rare event that it would be needed again – things are different today, however.
